Concrete pool surrounds on the Sunshine Coast

Pool decks and coping surrounds poured with the falls, drainage and slip resistance a pool needs, in finishes that tie the pool into the rest of the block.

$120 to $180 per m², supplied and laid. Prices may vary with site conditions and variations; the written quote after a site measure is fixed.

A pool on the Sunshine Coast is used most of the year, and the surface around it decides how the whole area looks and how it behaves wet. A pool surround is a slab with special conditions: constant splash, chemicals and salt, bare feet, and falls that have to move water away without a step out of level.

Poured for wet feet

The surround is formed to the coping with falls taken away from the water and the house, to drainage that actually leads somewhere. Finish selection considers grip first: exposed aggregate gives texture underfoot, and sealers are chosen for wet areas rather than the glossiest sample. Lighter tones stay noticeably cooler under the summer sun, which matters at the edge of a pool in January.

Finishes that tie the block together

The strongest pool areas on the coast run one finish through the outdoor spaces: the same exposed aggregate blend on the surround, the alfresco slab and the path to the gate. Coloured concrete in soft stone tones does the same job with a flatter, more architectural read.

Fencing and compliance

Pool barrier rules in Queensland govern gates, fences and the zones around them. The concrete work is planned around the compliant barrier layout, and any change to fencing sits with the pool owner and their fencing contractor; nothing about the surround is allowed to compromise the barrier.

What it costs

Surrounds price like patios with extra edge detail and finishing care, and the rates guide shows the range. Prices may vary with site conditions and variations; the written quote after a site measure is fixed.

How a job runs

Five stages, each signed off before the next

  1. 01

    Site measure

The block, the levels, the access and the ground, measured on site. Finishes compared against your house in daylight, not from a brochure.

  2. 02

    Written quote

One fixed written quote for the scope measured. Any crossover or covenant approvals your job needs are identified here, before anything is booked.

  3. 03

    Form and set out

Boards to string lines, levels checked twice, base compacted to suit the ground, steel on chairs. The day that decides how the job turns out.

  4. 04

    Pour and finish

Poured, screeded and finished in one continuous operation, timed for the weather. The finish you chose, applied when the surface is ready for it.

  5. 05

    Cure and handover

Concrete is kept curing, joints are cut on time and sealing follows once the surface has settled. Care and reseal intervals are covered at handover.

Questions

Pool surrounds questions

Which finish is right around a pool?

Exposed aggregate is the common choice because the stone gives texture underfoot and the sealed surface resists pool chemicals and salt. Coloured concrete in lighter tones stays cooler underfoot in summer. Finish and sealer are chosen together for a surface that stays wet.

How does the surround drain?

Away from the pool and away from the house. The surround is formed with falls to strip drains or lawn edges so splash and storm water leave the deck instead of ponding against coping or fences.

Can you pour around an existing pool?

Replacing tired pavers or extending a deck around an existing pool is common work. Levels are set against the existing coping, and where the old surface comes out first the job is planned so the pool area is out of action for as short a time as the pour and cure allow.
