Concrete patios and alfresco slabs on the Sunshine Coast

Outdoor living slabs formed to the levels the build needs, in plain, coloured or exposed aggregate finishes, for a region that lives outside most of the year.

$75 to $150 per m², supplied and laid. Prices may vary with site conditions and variations; the written quote after a site measure is fixed.

The Sunshine Coast builds outdoor rooms, not afterthoughts. An alfresco slab that meets the house at the right level, drains away from the building and carries a finish chosen for the setting turns a backyard into the part of the house that gets used most of the year.

Formed to levels, not poured to luck

A patio that works starts with where its surface needs to sit: against door thresholds, existing paving and the fall of the block. The slab is formed to those levels, poured on a prepared base with steel reinforcement, and finished with fall that takes storm water away from the house. Where the slab meets lawn or garden, the edge is formed clean and straight, because on an outdoor floor the edge is part of the look.

Finishes for outdoor rooms

  • Exposed aggregate ties an alfresco floor to a driveway or pool surround in the same blend, one surface running through the outdoor spaces. Detail on the exposed aggregate page.
  • Coloured concrete gives a flat architectural tone that suits modern builds; charcoal and warm stone tones are the common picks.
  • Plain concrete, broom or trowel finished, is the economical floor for covered areas and the right base if outdoor tiles are planned later.

One pour, better rates

Patios are the classic add on job: when the crew is already forming a driveway or paths, the patio rate comes down because the truck, the pump and the crew are on site once instead of twice. The rates guide covers how combined pours price. Prices may vary with site conditions and variations; the written quote after a site measure is fixed.

How a job runs

Five stages, each signed off before the next

  1. 01

    Site measure

The block, the levels, the access and the ground, measured on site. Finishes compared against your house in daylight, not from a brochure.

  2. 02

    Written quote

One fixed written quote for the scope measured. Any crossover or covenant approvals your job needs are identified here, before anything is booked.

  3. 03

    Form and set out

Boards to string lines, levels checked twice, base compacted to suit the ground, steel on chairs. The day that decides how the job turns out.

  4. 04

    Pour and finish

Poured, screeded and finished in one continuous operation, timed for the weather. The finish you chose, applied when the surface is ready for it.

  5. 05

    Cure and handover

Concrete is kept curing, joints are cut on time and sealing follows once the surface has settled. Care and reseal intervals are covered at handover.

Questions

Patios and alfresco slabs questions

What does a patio slab cost on the Sunshine Coast?

The rate depends on finish, access and how much forming the levels need, supplied and laid per square metre. Prices may vary with site conditions and variations; the written quote after a site measure is fixed.

Can the new slab match the house floor level?

That is the usual goal for an alfresco area, and it is a forming and drainage question. The slab is set to the level the doors need with fall taken away from the house, and where the block works against that, a drainage line at the edge handles the difference.

Which finish suits an alfresco area?

Covered areas open up the options because sun and rain matter less. Exposed aggregate carries the indoor outdoor look, coloured concrete gives a clean architectural floor, and a steel trowelled plain surface suits a covered room that will be furnished like one.
