Sunshine Coast Council crossovers

Within the Sunshine Coast Council area, the crossover, the section of driveway between your property boundary and the road, is built in the road reserve and follows council rules. A standard residential crossover does not need a permit. It is self assessed against the council’s crossover checklist and constructed to the council’s nominated standard drawings, in concrete, asphalt or bitumen; raised stamped patterns are not accepted, and clearances apply around stormwater pits, power poles and bus stops.

A crossover that does not meet every checklist item is non standard and needs formal written approval from the council before any work starts, through the council’s development or transport teams, with an application fee that the council sets each financial year. Replacing or widening a crossover in a way that changes its profile, surface, size or materials counts as construction and follows the same rules. Frontages on state controlled roads are handled by the state, not the council.

Homes in the Aura estate at Caloundra South sit in a Priority Development Area with their own approval arrangements, and both Aura and Harmony at Palmview carry developer design covenants for driveways, including finish restrictions. Check your release’s design guidelines; what applies to your block is confirmed before anything is booked.

Noosa Shire Council crossovers

In Noosa Shire, a standard residential crossover is self assessed against the council’s vehicle crossover checklist and built to the council’s nominated standard drawings without a permit. The surface must be concrete, including coloured and exposed aggregate, or asphalt; pavers, tiles, loose stone and painted or polished surfaces are not accepted, and the slab runs full width between the kerb and the boundary.

A crossover that does not meet the checklist, including a second crossover on the same property, is non standard and needs formal written approval from the council’s planning department before work starts, with an application fee the council sets each financial year. The council also expects whoever builds a crossover to carry substantial public liability insurance for work outside the property boundary, which we hold. Frontages on state controlled roads are handled by the state, not the council.
